What a good idea.

Proposal for new West Berkeley development

This past Friday the proposal was presented at a special Civic Arts Commision meeting where the main topic of discussion was the predicament of West Berkeley artists.  If the City buys off on certain zoning adjustments, what was once the Peerless Lighting plant at 2246 Fifth Street may become a mix of live/work loft, condo, gallery, office, and incubator space.   Read more about it in the Daily Planet.

Caruso says he’s throwing in the towel…

Is it true? Looks like we’ll have to wait and see. Caruso opted out this past Monday night/Tuesday morning when the Albany City Council voted against going ahead with the Environmental Impact Review for his application. Neighborhood groups such as the CItizens for the Albany Shoreline are not convinced he is really giving up. Read more on this topic in the Contra Costa Times and the Daily Planet.

More on the Bowl approval…

..in today’s Daily Planet.

Mourning the potential loss of the West Berkeley Bowl

While some west Berkeley residents are happy about the projects looming demise, others are very upset. Steve Donaldson is one of the latter. Read his commentary in today’s Daily Planet.

Dave Blake of ZAB fame has also written a piece on the topic for the Daily Planet.

West Berkeley Bowl…on hold?

Per the Daily Planet and the Berkeley Voice, Berkeley Bowl owner Glen Yasuda is contemplating withdrawing the the proposal for the market, citing rising construction costs and union issues. The Bowl will be up for discussion at this Tuesday’s (June 13) City Council meeting, 7pm at Old City Hall, 2134 MLK.  *If the application is indeed withdrawn, it will likely only be for the market portion of the project, the warehouse is still viable.

Rick Caruso is at it again

Word has it that Magna/Caruso will be (or may already have) filed a lawsuit against the city of Albany.  The company allegedly issued an warning to the City Attorney on May 25th stating that they would file suit if the City did not drop the Shoreline Protection Initiative by noon on May 31st.  To find out more about this, and to voice your opinion, attend this Monday’s City Council Meeting at 8pm.  For more info on the history of this matter click here for past posts or visit www.albanyshoreline.org.

BUSD need not adhere to City’s review processes

This is great for the Berkeley Unified School District, since it can save them time and money, but not so much for the city as a whole. While these processes can be long, drawn out and hard for everyone (look at the West Berkeley Bowl) it does provide moderation that includes the interests of those beyond the immediate developers of the property, in this case the school district. This has become an issue recently because of the pending development of the BUSD’s West Campus site. Read more about it in today’s Daily Planet.
*Per the same Daily Planet article, the BUSD is said to be losing $400,000 a year on their proposed transportation hub/bus yard at Sixth between Gilman and Camelia. Apparently this project did need to go through some City approvals.
