Pacific Steel On The City Council’s Agenda - TONIGHT

“Tonight’s series of meetings begins at 5 p.m. with a workshop to discuss the 2008-2009 citywide work plan. At 6:30 p.m. the Redevelopment Agency will meet to look at adding $400,000 to the Oxford Plaza Apartment project.

“Stop the Pollution” protest date set

A date has been set for the anti-pollution protest against Pacific Steel Casting: Saturday November 11, 2006, 11am.  Meet at 9th and Gilman.  There will be a march and rally, sponsored by West Berkeley Alliance, Green Action, the Ecology Center, and the PSC Protest Committee.  Stay tuned for more info.

On a related note, there will be a presentation by environmental justice activist Lois Gibbs at the West Berkeley Senior Center (1900 Sixth St) on Oct. 19 @ 7:30 pm.  Click here for more info.

Meeting about upcoming Pacific Steel Casting protest

No date has been set, but there will be a neighborhood meeting about it this Wednesday, Sept. 27 in Cedar Rose Park at 6:30 pm. Other neighborhood issues will be discussed as well. No injunction for Pacific Steel Casting

Communities for a Better Environment’s request for an injunction against PSC was not granted. A trial date for CBE and PSC has not yet been set. Read about it in the Planet or the Daily Californian.

Commentary in the Daily Planet Re: Pacific Steel

Andrew Galpern responds to the Sept. 12 article in the Planet about Pacific Steel’s emissions report with some comments, questions, and concerns.

Pacific Steel has finally handed over the emissions report to the BAAQMD

…At least most of the emissions reports. Per BAAQMD, June and July are still missing. Read more about this development in today’s Daily Planet. Read past posts on this topic here.

Pacific Steel says they will release the long awaited emissions inventory….

But not until the first week of September. The announcement comes from Elizabeth Jewel, of Aroner, Jewel & Ellis Partners, Pacific Steel’s PR representative. In the meantime, PSC is being sued by the BAAQMD for violating the 2005 Settlement Agreement. Read about it in today’s Daily Planet. See also the BAAQMD press release from Aug. 14.

A third lawsuit against Pacific Steel Casting is underway

Requested emissions reports have still not been released, until they are, the BAAQMD intends to fine Pacific Steel $10,000 for every day they are overdue. Read more about it in the Planet. The other two lawsuits to date are being brought by Neighborhood Solutions and Communities for a Better Environment. Read more about them here.
*There is a protest against Pacific Steel organized by neighborhood groups, scheduled for Sept. 16. More info will be posted on this as it becomes available.

Two lawsuits filed against Pacific Steel

One from Communities for a Better Environment for violating the Clean Air Act and another from 25 plantiffs filed under the guidance of Neighborhood Solutions.  Read more in the Oakland Tribune and the Contra Costa Times.

On July 6th, Communities for a Better Environment(CBE) filed a federal lawsuit against Pacific Steel

The non-profit alleges that PSC is exceeding emission standards set forth in the Clean Air Act.  Read about it in today’s Daily Planet.  For more info on CBE, visit their website.

More neighborhood wrath directed at Pacific Steel

Read David Landon’s letter to the editor in today’s Daily Planet.  He urges people who have been affected to come together and take a stand.  If you’d like to become more involved in the issue, some places to start are the West Berkeley Alliance and the Clean Air Coalition.  Or the simply call the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (1-800-334-ODOR) to file a complaint when the smell is present.
