Disappearing art space in West Berkeley

Spurred by the past year’s loss of the Nexus and the Drayage artist collectives, Berkeley’s Civic Arts Commission hosted a meeting on this very topic this past friday. Read the newspaper blurb for it here. Needless to say, the promulgation was a little last minute. If we come across a summary of the meeting, we’ll certainly post it. In the meantime, it’s good to know that this discussion is continuing.

Thoughts from Berkeley residents on Clif Bar’s departure.

Steven Donaldson and Bob Archibald share some of their thoughts with the Planet.

CLIF BAR is going …

It’s been in the works for awhile, but now it looks like CLIF Bar is officially leaving Berkeley. It will move to Alameda in July of 2008 when the 10 year lease on its current space on 5th Street expires. This is quite a loss considering it is a local home grown Berkeley business with a strong commitment to being ecologically sound. Much has been said and written since the news earlier this week:

Berkeley Daily Planet:Clif Bar Announces Move to Alameda
Berkeley Voice: Clif Bar Makes Move from Berkeley to Alameda
Oakland Tribune: Clif Bar Leaves Berkeley
SF Chronicle: Clif Bar Moves to Alameda after 16 years in Berkeley
SF Chronicle: Letter to the editor from Zelda Bronstein

This is even sadder news as it occurs on the heals of Power Bar’s departure from downtown Berkeley.

The Nexus Institute’s time is almost up

In about a month’s time, it will follow in the footsteps of the Crucible and Drayage artist collectives. Another loss for West Berkeley that will be hard to replace. Read more about it in the Planet.

News about the Nexus Collective

Yesterday the Nexus Collective received an eviction notive from the Humane Society. It will take effect on Aug. 2, 2006. More on this topic soon! Read past posts here.

No evictions yet…

But the fate of the tenants at the Nexus Institute, located at 2702 Eighth Street in west Berkeley, is still unknown. Read about the latest developements here.

The looming eviction of the Nexus Collective

Berkeley stands to lose more of its artists should this eviction come to pass. The Nexus collective has resided at 2701 Eighth St. for over 20 years, but their lease is up on May 31st. If the Humane Society (the landlord) choses not to renew it, the collective will be forced to move out or attempt to buy the building. Read more about it in today’s Daily Planet.

The Drayage is finally ready for sale

The property will be purchased and developed by Hudson McDonald, LLC. Click here for today’s Daily Planet article.

Oh No, CLIF Bar Don’t Go!

CLIF Bar’s facility on Fifth Street is no longer big enough to house their one hundred million dollar a year business. Read the Oakland Tribune Article about it here.

It will be a sad day in west berkeley if this business goes…. maybe they should move to the soon to be for sale Flint Ink site on Fifth and Gilman…or the old urban ore site on Sixth….or…..has anyone got other ideas?
