Camelia Street Blog

Google Maps

Slowly but surely, Google has begun to document the neighborhood.  Of course issues of privacy and security have been raised…..  In the meantime, here’s what the street views are starting to look like: Fourth Street, the skate park, PSC , Flint Ink, etc.

So if you see a van with a large camera on top slowly driving by…..

Berkeley’s Iceland May Soon Close its Doors

After nearly 70 years in business, the ice rink may close for good due to financial and environmental reasons.  Read more in the 01.19.07 Chronicle.

Black Oak Books May Be Closing

If Black Oak Books can’t find a buyer for its two stores (one in North Berkeley and one in San Francisco), it may soon be closing its doors. Read more about it in the 01.18.07 Daily Californian.
* This post doesn’t directly relate to West Berkeley per se, but it does reflect a disturbing city (and nation-wide) trend faced by independent bookstores. With online and larger retail outfits gaining the upperhand in the market, smaller local outfits have a hard time keeping up.  Of course this is the case with almost any smaller locally owned business these days, but having a variety of good bookstores in a college town is an especially important asset.  I’ve already felt the burn from the loss of Cody’s Books on Telegraph…I’d hate to lose another on Shattuck.  Don’t know what the solution here is…..

Opponents to Smart Growth in Berkeley?

Of course. With pressure from the state to increase the annual production of new housing units, many Berkeleyans begin to cringe. Read about the latest housing quotas and ABAG (Bay Area Association of Government) in the 01.16.07 Daily Planet. Read more about “Smart Growth” here.

Read related Daily Planet Commentary from Steve Martinot here.

Berkeley was Rattled by a 3.7 Earthquake yesterday

Read more about it in today’s 12.21.06 Chronicle.

Wired or Wireless?

The future of Berkeley’s municiple internet is still being discussed.  While wireless is easier to provide, the service may not be as dependable as the good old wired kind.  Read more about it at sf.gate.

Update on Berkeley flooding issues

With all the rain we’ve been having the drains have been getting clogged up faster than ever. Unfortunately Berkeley has only one mud sucking truck to clean them out. The ideal solution would be an entirely new system, but without extra money in the budget there may be little hope for improvement. A storm water tax may be in the works. Click here to read more.

Berkeley’s budget outlook is improving…

…and so is the air.

Click here to read a summary of yesterday’s state of Berkeley address given by Mayor Bates. I’m still a little hesitant to believe green house gases have been reduced by 14% in Berkeley. Maybe as a whole, but I don’t think that would hold true for west Berkeley.
Other articles related to reducing green house gases in Berkeley:

*I’m still not clear on how the City calculates the reduction, especially when the amount of bio-diesel used for city vehicles has gone up since they stopped using 100% bio-diesel earlier last year (see link to Phil Kamlarz update above). If I can find a better description of the figures and method they used to calculate this, I will post it. In the meantime, I’ll just have to wonder.
