In response to the cleaning method of a chemical filled drum used in the manufacturing process, workers walked out and were then were locked out by the store’s proprietors.

Who are they? West Berkeley’s (and Alameda’s for that matter) only public pump for bio-diesel. To read about who else won a sustainability award, see the Nov. 17, 2006 article in the Berkeley Voice. Yohan, Inc, a Japanese distributor, puchased the 2 remaining stores. Current Cody’s owner Andy Ross made the announcement this past Wednesday. Read more about it in today’s Oakland Tribune or Contra Costa Times.
The San Francisco Chronicle just published a short list of fun shops and cafes–mostly small local businesses– on San Pablo Ave. near Dwight Way. While this is arguably the most happening stretch of San Pablo Ave. at present, there are many interesting spots along its length. One I stumbled across recently was the Transmissions Gallery, at 1177 San Pablo, a block or so north of Gilman. The storefront is occupied by the gallery, with an architectural office located behind. Their next opening is Thursday Sept. 7, 5-9pm. Stop in!
Steven Donaldson and Bob Archibald share some of their thoughts with the Planet.
It’s been in the works for awhile, but now it looks like CLIF Bar is officially leaving Berkeley. It will move to Alameda in July of 2008 when the 10 year lease on its current space on 5th Street expires. This is quite a loss considering it is a local home grown Berkeley business with a strong commitment to being ecologically sound. Much has been said and written since the news earlier this week:
Berkeley Daily Planet:Clif Bar Announces Move to Alameda
Berkeley Voice: Clif Bar Makes Move from Berkeley to Alameda
Oakland Tribune: Clif Bar Leaves Berkeley
SF Chronicle: Clif Bar Moves to Alameda after 16 years in Berkeley
SF Chronicle: Letter to the editor from Zelda Bronstein
This is even sadder news as it occurs on the heals of Power Bar’s departure from downtown Berkeley.
Apparently this is old news…but here it is anyway. Back in Feb/March of 2005, Cemex, one of the largest producers of building materials in the world, bought RMC Pacific. Sounds a little like a monopoly to me. The old RMC plant located on 5th st. between Camelia and Gilman will continue to function as usual.

CLIF Bar’s facility on Fifth Street is no longer big enough to house their one hundred million dollar a year business. Read the Oakland Tribune Article about it here.
It will be a sad day in west berkeley if this business goes…. maybe they should move to the soon to be for sale Flint Ink site on Fifth and Gilman…or the old urban ore site on Sixth….or…..has anyone got other ideas?
This article reviews what might be in store for west Berkeley in the coming years.
What are the Top 5 sustainable/environmentally friendly businesses you’d like to see in Berkeley? There is usually a lot of complaining about what we don’t want to see in the neighborhood, but what about what we do want? Are there any types of healthy businesses that would provide white AND blue collar jobs?
