This Wednesday marks the start of “official” public talks regarding the inclusion of car dealerships into West Berkeley zoning. Mayor Tom Bates has been a relatively long time supporter of the idea due to the financial benefits it offers to the City as a whole. Per today’s Daily Planet, Pacific Steel will have a brand new carbon filter in operation by September 2006. This should mitigate the foul odor (but not the chemicals) coming from plant #3.
Don’t know when they started doing this, but the City of Berkeley’s Newscan webpage now cites individually run local blogs as news sources right alongside the Berkeley Daily Planet, Oakland Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, etc. The most recent example of this can be seen in the Oct. 5 2005 Newscan archive section, items #13–#15 below.
